Since the 1970s the population of Davidson County has been significantly high compared to surrounding counties in Middle Tennessee.

Over recent decades the population of Middle Tennessee has continued to grow significantly. In the 1970s, the population of Davidson County was over seven times greater then that of Rutherford County. This number towered over both Williamson County and Rutherford County for years.

The gap has gotten smaller over recent years. As shown in the chart, data from the 2019 U.S. Census shows the deflation of this gap. The population of Davidson County in 2018 is only two times greater than Rutherford County. This number is significantly lower than the seven times greater in 1970.
